Laurie Schultz, CCIM

Laurie Schultz, CCIM

Principal & Co-Founder

Laurie has a true passion for developing innovative strategies with partners to create efficient models for healthcare real estate that are reflective of the rapidly changing care delivery models in the medical, senior housing and active adult industries.

With a diverse development background, Laurie has spent her career balancing real estate investments with forward thinking healthcare trends. During her career, she has developed projects in medical ambulatory care, post-acute rehabilitation, senior housing and market rate apartments exceeding $1.5 billion in value. Ms. Schultz has an extensive background in advising healthcare systems and physician providers nationally to strategically expand, and created a predictive demographic model to target ambulatory care site selection. She led a development team for the western half of the country for the largest skilled nursing development company in the nation focusing on short-term stay rehabilitation properties. Laurie has also developed 3,500+ units of market-rate, Class A, apartments and senior communities, and directed development for one of the country’s largest and most respected privately held apartment management and development firms, leading expansion across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Laurie is a licensed Indiana Managing Broker with a CCIM Designation and is the Indiana CCIM Chapter 2018 Past-President. She was honored to be named a Leader to Watch by Senior Housing News, and is frequently is invited to speak at numerous real estate organizations and healthcare conferences and podcasts including Interface Active Adult and National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC). Laurie graduated with cum laude honors from Butler University and is an active alumnus from the Lacy School of Business along with various other philanthropic organizations.

Laurie is an active fitness enthusiast and enjoys every new group fitness and wellness craze. A constant traveler, she enjoys exploring the world with friends and family and is an avid baseball fan especially for her St. Louis Cardinals. She is fortunate to be joined by her young son on many trips, and inspiring the family’s love for baseball by coaching his t-ball teams.

Mike Mattingly

Mike Mattingly

Principal & Co-Founder

Michael Mattingly is Principal and Co-Founder of Avenue Development, Avenue Construction and Viva Bene. Founded in 2015, Avenue is a full-service real estate development, construction and management advisory company focused on innovative solutions for wellness centered healthcare, active adult living coupled with post-acute and senior living properties. Viva Bene is Avenue’s collection of active adult rental communities integrating wellness programming and care coordination services to help residents live the good life in their home.

Michael’s values and vision for delivering quality healthcare and active living for seniors, via real estate, evolve around creating meaningful partnerships, financing structures and a cohesive team approach to development. Michael leads the day-to-day execution at the development company, opening $500million spanning 1.5million square feet of assets since inception, including the creation and management of efficiencies from land acquisition, entitlement, design and financing ground work it takes to close and transact successful developments.

Prior to co-founding Avenue Development, he lead a pre-construction team focusing on the expansion efforts of comprehensive care facilities nationally, and in five years was responsible for the leadership of a portfolio valued more than $300 million, covering over two million square feet. Michael spent years assisting on pre-construction efforts and design-assist activities for one of the Midwest’s largest medical builders, with projects ranging from large high-acuity hospitals to outpatient centers and medical office buildings. Michael’s pre-construction experience help steer Avenue Construction’s abilities to underwrite design and construction options which aid the development team in site selection, design review and constructability best practices.

Michael is a Licensed Indiana Broker, member with the Penrod Society, current Corporate Work Study Board Member at Providence Cristo Rey High School, Co-Chair of the Facilities Committee at St. Pius X School and an active member of the Mount Comfort Corridor Alliance. Michael graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in Building Construction Management and Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business (previously Krannert School of Management) in Finance. Michael lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Jessica, and their four young children.

Matthew Gorman

Matthew Gorman

Chief Investment Officer

Matthew Gorman is the Chief Investment Officer at Avenue Development, where he oversees investments across active adult housing, medical office, and healthcare real estate. Mr. Gorman previously served as Chief Investment Officer for IREIT by BGO and Managing Director with BGO, a leading global real estate investment management firm with over $80 billion in assets under management.

Since joining BGO in September 2011, Mr. Gorman played a pivotal role in growing the firm’s assets under management from $0 to over $10 billion, prior to its merger with Bentall Kennedy in July 2019. He was actively involved in fund formation and strategy, the acquisition of over $5 billion in assets, and managing BGO’s investments across all major asset classes throughout the United States.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Gorman worked in investment banking with Barclays Capital, focusing on corporate M&A and public capital raising. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree with Highest Distinction in Finance from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

Adam Filler

Adam Filler

President, Avenue Construction

Adam has nearly two decades of pre-construction management, construction management, general contracting and subcontracting experience within the senior living, medical and multifamily markets totaling over 2 million square feet constructed.  While with one of Midwest’s largest and renowned General Contractors for 12 years, he constructed over a million square feet of senior living and medical space and a portfolio valued nearly $200 million.  Later, Adam led a senior living development and general contracting group to grow their general contracting revenue in his territory from $20 million to $80 million in a span of 2 years, adding an additional eight hundred thousand square feet of senior living constructed space to his portfolio.  He expanded his abilities with Avenue Development acting as VP of Development undertaking all aspects of development; including but not limited to, market research, land acquisition, proforma evaluation, general contractor selection, procurement of design, working with Towns/City on securing TIFs and approvals, etc.  Finally, he rounded out his understanding of construction by leading an Exteriors Division within the Multifamily space performing work such as Roofing, Siding, Windows and Decks; working together with the Team to grow Revenues from $13MM to $33 MM over a 3-year period.

Adam is a previous board member of the Construction Advisory Council at Purdue University, a Graduate of Emerging Leaders Group of ABC Indiana Chapter and a previous Board Member of Hamilton County Area Neighborhood Development. Adam graduated from Purdue University, BS Building Construction Management.

Alexander O’Neill

Alexander O’Neill

Executive Vice President & General Counsel

Alexander is committed to providing creative and practical solutions to managing legal risk. Prior to joining Avenue, Alexander practiced with the law firm of Krieg DeVault LLP in the areas of real estate and environmental law, and as in-house counsel with what was at the time the largest skilled nursing development company in the country.

Alexander attended Purdue University, and the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, where he graduated with a joint J.D. (cum laude) and Master of Public Affairs degree. While in private practice, Alexander was recognized as an Indiana Super Lawyers Rising Star. Alexander has served as pro bono legal counsel to the Central Indiana Land Trust and as a member of its Board of Directors, including as President. Alexander is also a graduate of the Indianapolis Bar Association Bar Leader Series.

Alexander enjoys the outdoors and sports. He and his wife and their two children like to spend time skiing, hiking with their dogs, fishing, and watching or playing basketball. They also enjoy traveling and exploring different cultures and places around the world.

Senior Vice President, Development

Matt has over a decade of experience dedicated to the seniors housing industry creating life-enhancing environments for America’s seniors and those who care for them. Prior to joining Avenue, he led project management and procurement operations for one of the nation’s largest professional services firm and was responsible for exceptional project execution on over 200 projects annually. Matt was responsible for leading teams dedicated to the roll out of both repositioning and new development programs across the United States for some of the nation’s largest operators and real estate developers in seniors housing.

Matt is a licensed Project Management Professional (PMP) and active member of the Project Management Institute.  He is also a graduate of Alma College, with a BA in Communication.

Outside of the office, Matt enjoys spending time with his family taking advantage of what each season of the year has to offer.  As an avid sports fan and eternal optimist, he spends each fall holding out hope that this will in fact be the year the Detroit Lions win the Super Bowl.

Brian Lane, MBA

Brian Lane, MBA

Vice President, Strategic Development

Brian has a diverse operational background with over 25 years of experience in the senior living industry. During this time, Brian has held leadership positions in all facets of senior housing including serving as an on-site Executive Director as well as a senior leadership role as Director of Operations for one of the nation’s most well-respected operators. During this time, he garnered a specialized proficiency for opening both new skilled nursing and private pay communities, and was directly responsible for the successful launch of over 1,200 market rate senior housing apartments in three years. Prior to joining Avenue Development, he was Director at K2M Design leading the Senior Housing division, which allowed Brian to provide clients a unique ability to recommend design ideas based on his operational expertise. This distinction guided the creation of a multitude of new senior housing design concepts implemented across many new projects. His tenured experience providing operational, financial and strategic guidance across multi-site community platforms has made him a respected leader in the senior living industry. Brian graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in Public Health/Health Administration and then received an MBA with Finance Concentration from Butler University.

Brian loves to spend time outside and with his family.  A crazy sports fan who loves to play golf and tennis and cheer his Pittsburgh Steelers.  Also loves to hike and snorkel–would love to scuba dive…but has not got the guts to swim with the sharks quite yet.

Robin Keltner, CPA

Robin Keltner, CPA

Vice President, Accounting

Robin brings with her over 28 years of experience in the accounting field. She began her career working for a local CPA firm in the Business Valuations and Tax Departments before moving on to take over the Controller position at a large Office Supply Cooperative. While there, she managed the Accounting Department, maintained the company’s general ledger, along with preparing the financial statements for Executives and Board of Directors. As the company grew to over $200 million in revenue, she was instrumental in working with Banking Institutions to oversee the company’s financial needs. Robin obtained her Degree in Accounting from Ball State University.

When Robin isn’t crunching numbers, she is spending as much time outside as possible whether it is hiking, jogging, tailgating with her family or wherever the weather takes her.

Brent Bauters

Vice President, Construction, Avenue Construction

Brent has 15+ years of construction experience throughout the United States in both the GC and Owner Agent roles, most of which were spent with Adam Filler, Michael Mattingly, Ashley Dyer and Lyndsy Cain at Meyer Najem Construction. While with one of Midwest’s largest and renowned General Contractors for 13 years, he also constructed over a million square feet of senior living and medical space and a portfolio valued nearly $200 million.  He has successfully delivered projects ranging from tenant improvements to 5-story ground-up construction and multi-facility campus development. As VP of Construction, he oversees development project progress from inception from the development team from preconstruction through warranty.

Brent graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in Building Construction Management.

Kristin Lau

Controller, Avenue Construction

Kristin has 17+ years of experience in construction accounting, project management, operations, office administration and HR. Her career in construction began as a Receptionist at a local building envelope company. Kristin’s natural insight for the construction industry has elevated her to an array of roles including Accounts Receivable Specialist, Operations Administrator, Project Coordinator and Exteriors Account Manager. Her ability to be tasked with high level management will play an intricate role in her position as Controller for Avenue Construction. Construction is not only her drive but has become her passion.

Kristin loves music, going to outdoor concerts and spending time with her 2 girls. She also enjoys the beach and most outdoor activities.

Meg Sutton, NCIDQ, ASID

Development Manager

Meg is an award-winning and NCIDQ-certified interior designer with over 15 years of experience in designing spaces for seniors and those who care for them. Prior to coming to Avenue, Meg led the creative direction for one of the nation’s largest professional service firms specializing in seniors housing. In that role, Meg was directly responsible for growing individual designers’ technical and creative skills, managing quality across the studio, and developing new business opportunities with internal and external partners. Meg graduated with a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee prior to beginning her design career, and her passion for fine arts helps her see design solutions in a different light. She is an active member of the American Society of Interior Designers and volunteers as a troop leader for her daughters’ Girl Scout troops as a commitment to teaching young girls about leadership and stewardship in their community.

Joy has over 20 years of experience in real estate development and construction.  Joy has worked in the pre-development, brokerage, survey & engineering, architectural design and construction segments of both the commercial and residential industries.  By working within many different fields in the real estate development business across the nation, she has been able to gain a wide range of knowledge within each discipline needed from site contract execution to grand opening of a project.

With 45+ years of experience, Dick Holmes brings invaluable talent to the Avenue Construction Team. Dick’s career in the construction industry began early on with a local masonry firm as a jackhammer operator. The love for the business later evolved to Superintendent position. Time and again, Dick has proven to be a top performer and a team player. His professional success is heavily based on his ability to deliver projects on time, willingness to work through difficult issues with all parties in mind and his desire to see the team success. His responsibilities include overall onsite coordination of subcontractors and vendors, quality control, safety, scheduling and as well as aiding in the growth of Avenue Construction Superintendents through mentoring. When not in the field, Dick enjoys spending time with friends and family.

Brian Brewer

Brian Brewer

Sr. Superintendent, Avenue Construction

Brian Brewer is a retired Volunteer Fireman Captain and brings over 35+ years of experience in the construction industry to the Avenue Team. In 1987, he started working as a laborer for his family business. This core foundation and opportunity has been the guiding principle through many of the roles Brian has mastered throughout the years. His vast construction portfolio includes both residential and commercial construction projects. Within that portfolio, Brian has gained invaluable experience with multi-family apartments and senior living facilities. Brian provides a strong work ethic to the Avenue team and is not afraid to roll up his sleeves to get the job done.

In his free time, Brian enjoys spending time with his family and grandkids. When he’s not watching his favorite sport – NASCAR, Brian might be found restoring furniture that he and his wife hand picked on one of their many antiquing road trips.

Jody joins the Avenue Construction team with over 20 years of experience. He started his career after finishing trade school as an apprentice. Over the years he has worked as a Journeyman, Project Manager, Construction Manager, Operations Manager and a General Superintendent. The key to Jody’s professional success is the awareness and foresight of project goals. This keeps him ahead of the game and ready to meet daily challenges. In his spare time, Jody enjoys hunting, fishing and camping. He once slept outside for 5 months straight in only a sleeping bag! However, what he is most proud of are his 4 children, who he loves to visit and spend time with.

With over 25 years of experience in construction, Tim brings a diverse talent to the Avenue Construction Team. Tim got his start in construction after attending the Jouneyman’s Carpenter Apprenticeship Training Center. He has worked on projects ranging from restaurants, hospitals, prisons, and stadiums, to name a few. He has supervised renovation improvements in hotels and was the General Trades Project Engineer for an Airport Terminal. Owning the job from start to finish is what drives Tim to succeed. Growing up as a military child, Tim’s family moved every 2 or 3 years. Before high school he lived in 4 different states, Puerto Rico and England. He has also relocated to 7 different states for work. Now that he is settled in Indianapolis, he enjoys gardening, cooking, biking and cheering on the Colts. Tim is also a Trail Building Crew Member of the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association.

Fatai Lawal

Fatai Lawal

Fatai’s background in the construction industry began 15 years ago as an intern for Pizzo Design in Nigeria. In 2016 when he moved to the United States, he started off as an Assistant Superintendent. By 2021 he was working as an Assistant Project Manager for a local GC until 2024. Fatai’s passion for knowledge is what drives him to continue to grow personally and professionally. The day is not complete unless he has learned something new. He is a graduate of the University of Lagos in Nigeria, a member of the Project Management Institute as a Certified Associate of Project Management and is currently working on becoming a certified Project Management Professional. Outside of work, Fatai enjoys spending time with his wife, his son and 2 daughters. They love to travel to Nigeria to visit family or help where they can at home in their community. On the weekends Fatai loves playing or watching his favorite soccer team. Go Arsenal FC London!

Dominic joins the Avenue Construction team with 10 years of experience in the construction field. He has spent a total of 5 years in the field and 5 years in management for previous General Contractors. Dominic attended Marion University on a football scholarship and as the quarterback took his team to the National Championship in 2015.

In his free time, Dominic loves to be outdoors, play golf, and is an avid football fan. Striving to learn something new every day is what makes Dominic a valuable team player. He lives by the motto, “whatever you do in life, do it to the best of your ability.”

Conner Belcher

Estimator, Avenue Construction

Conner Belcher graduated from IUPUI with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor in Mathematics. He is eager to put his love for crunching numbers to good use by bringing a key role to the estimating department for Avenue Construction. After years of being in the field, Conner has a unique estimating lense. He has seen firsthand how estimation directly impacts a construction project and how to adapt and forecast to keep a job within budget. Conner has always worn many hats including glazier, installer and project engineer to name a few. Some of the most fascinating projects Conner has been on were also some of the largest buildings in West Lafayette, IN.

For fun, Conner likes to tinker with upgrades to his car in hopes to get it on the track at the Putnam Park Road Course. If he could put any vacation spot on repeat, it would be the Dominican Republic.

Office Manager

Ashley brings 18+ years of high level accounting, management, organization, and leadership skills to the Avenue family of companies. While with one of Midwest’s largest and renowned General Contractors for 15 years, she led the accounting department for a large, $150m+ annual, national commercial construction management company and has an innate ability to streamline best practices providing optimal results and timeless onboarding. Most of her most recent experience was within the healthcare industry including assisted living facilities, on-campus hospitals, ambulatory locations and small medical office projects. Her acute attention to detail and expertise are undoubtedly an advantage to the Avenue Team.

Ashley graduated from Indiana University-Bloomington with a B.S. in Business with a Minor in Spanish.

Sydney Montgomery

Accounting Administrator & Market Analyst

Sydney provides essential support to the Avenue Development Team. With an eye for detail and analytical talent, Sydney gathers data on consumers and competitors, helping the team make informed decisions. She is also responsible for preparing invoices and financial reports to assist with daily operations.

Sydney received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and is a Licensed North Carolina Broker. Her accomplishments and best practices bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role. She is committed to providing exceptional service and delivering measurable results for Avenue.

Outside of work, Sydney enjoys spending time with her partner Caleb and their two cats, Jasper and Waffles. She loves to travel, meet new people, and stay active by hiking and practicing yoga.

Gary Smith

Gary Smith

Executive Advisor

Gary’s mission is to transform healthcare via disruptive business models in housing, wellness delivery, local food production and other innovative methods.  As Executive Advisor, Gary consults with Avenue Development and its clients in their efforts to develop new skilled nursing, senior housing, active adult and intergenerational communities across the country. He also works with operators of these properties and health systems with integrated post-acute care to improve the delivery and coordination of care for our elders through program implementation and operational budget assessments.

Gary strongly believes the combination of sustainable local food production, preventative healthcare delivery via the direct primary care model, and housing innovations can result in the development of communities that improve people’s wellness and longevity.  He has combined these passions in his efforts as the Managing Director of Organic Health Investments and Owner of Rolling Fork Organic Farm, and coordinates numerous programs with various organizations and health systems to address the social determinants of health; access to local/healthy food, improving the quality of housing and improving socialization in local communities.

A constant innovator in senior housing, Gary has worked with Dr. Bill Thomas, founder of the Green House Project, which has now led to becoming an investor and advisor to Minka Homes which will revolutionize affordable housing for all ages. He is the former Senior Vice President of Mainstreet Health, and prior to joining Mainstreet provided consulting services to acute care hospitals and post-acute providers to address hospital re-admissions, strategic business development and new revenue cycle opportunities via GSS Management Group. Gary has an esteemed operations background, heading operations for Encore Healthcare, with 30 skilled nursing centers and 5 long term care hospitals and was the co-founder and Executive Vice President of Administration for American Care Communities, an assisted living start-up, growing from one AL/IL property in North Carolina to 28 across 4 states and selling the company to a public senior housing firm in 1999. Gary began his career with Beverly Enterprises, now Golden Living, involved with acquisitions, development and construction over a 10-year period. During this time, Beverly grew from 220 facilities to over 1,000 senior housing properties in all states except New York and Alaska.

Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Political Science degree from the University of Florida.
